WOOD SMART   WOOD SAMPLES FOR REFERENCE AND IDENTIFICATION

THE NORTH AMERICAN WOOD COLLECTION

Developed by furniture-maker Gerald Curry to give woodworkers the ability to examine, identify, and work 46 different species of North American woods.  Unlike veneer samples, the backs of these 1/2 inch thick pieces can be hand-planed multiple times to test a species’ workability or to try out numerous finish samples while being able to plane or sand back to raw wood each time.

For wood identification purposes these samples are invaluable.  The 1/2 inch thickness gives you a generous look at the all important end grain of a species, and it allows you to see both a tangential and a radial surface and to directly sense a wood’s texture, density, and smell.

Samples measure 1/2 inch thick by 3 inches wide by 6 inches long.  Each is labeled with its common and scientific names as well as density and shrinkage information.  A detailed explanation of the importance of this shrinkage data and a table that will allow you to calculate the seasonal dimensional changes for any species is included.

46 Samples of North American Woods:
