The Joiner and Cabinet Maker
Chris Schwarz & Joel Moskowitz

Originally written in 1839, the story follows the journey of young Thomas as he completes his apprenticeship with a rural woodworking shop. Primarily written to provide a guide to young men considering the joinery or cabinetmaking trades, Chris and Joel have added a wealth of information to supplement the original text. An extensive introduction provides historical context, illustrating the practices and tools of the time. The original text is included, along with a chapter on “Modern Tools” which had been added in a later edition. Extensive footnotes in the original text clarify points for the modern reader. Lastly, Chris Schwarz builds each project himself, adding his own perspective to the construction process.

The optional DVD costs an additional $5.00, and includes three narrated slideshows documenting the construction process, with color photos not included in the book. These slideshows must be played on a personal computer. Sketchup drawings for each project are also included on the DVD. Please note in the comment of your order that you'd like the DVD as well.

The Art of Joinery
Joseph Moxon

by Joseph Moxon, with commentary by Christopher Schwarz

In 1678 Joseph Moxon printed “The Mechanick Excercises”, which included a section entitled The Art of Joinery. Last month, Christopher Schwarz reprinted The Art of Joinery, but with updated language, and commentary. Here’s how Chris describes the work:

“For the woodworker who is exploring hand work, Moxon’s chapters on woodworking offer important clues about the tools and how to use them and are essential reading. Unfortunately, “Mechanick Exercises” is out of print, and used copies fetch as much as $100.

So we decided to reprint Moxon’s writings on joinery, make them easier to read and add commentary and photos that explain early woodworking practices. We cleaned up the odd period spellings, shortened the run-on sentences without changing the meanings, and added notes in the text to help the reader. We also split up Moxon’s illustrations so the drawing of the paring chisel, for example, is with the text about the paring chisel.

Then we added a plain-spoken explanation of Moxon’s original text, which can be bedeviling at times. We tried to explain what was going on in each section of “The Art of Joinery,” and illustrated Moxon’s techniques with more than 40 photos.”

When building furniture, you need your workbench to be able to hold your boards to accurately work the faces, edges and ends. Chris Schwarz has built and used ten different types of workbenches and has experimented with many work holding challenges and solutions. In this DVD he demonstrates various strategies for holding the workpiece for these essential tasks, by designing or modifying a workbench for efficient use.
