LIE-NIELSEN IMPROVED WORKBENCH
A workbench is one of the most important tools in the shop. A good bench needs to be flat, stable and heavy. We modified several key features to create the Lie-Nielsen Improved Workbench:
The top is 4” (10.16cm) thick solid maple. Overall length is 84”, including the tail vise handle. Width is 24”, excluding the shoulder vise. No skirt, no tool tray, just plenty of clamping surface.
Trestle legs are 3” (7.62cm) square and flush with the front of the bench. The front stretcher is 5¼” (13.34cm) wide and flush to the front of the legs and benchtop. Drawbored mortise and tenon joints.
The rugged tail vise has 6½” (16.51cm) of travel, with a non-traditional “no L-block” jaw. The shoulder vise is a chain-drive twin-screw vise, with 12” (30.48cm) spacing between the screws, 8¼” (20.95cm) of travel, and a 22½” (57.15cm) maple jaw.
The top is machined flat within a tolerance of plus or minus .010” (.25mm). We recommend that the bench be re-flattened as needed, every year or two.
Made of Hard Maple, a native hardwood that is stable, heavy and tough. This bench weighs in at 250 pounds (113.4kg).
Lie-Nielsen benches are finished with a 3-part mixture of spar-varnish, boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits. This traditional finish seals the wood, but does not make it slippery. The finish will need to be renewed from time to time.
Benches are supplied with two vise handles and two wooden square bench dogs. Dog holes are 29/32” (2.30cm) x 1-1/8” (2.85cm).

SPECIFICATIONS
HEIGHT: Most benches currently on the market are about 35” (88.9cm) high. For many people today, a taller bench is more comfortable. We can make your bench up to 38” (96.52cm) high.
RIGHT OR LEFT HAND: The tail vise and shoulder vise can be positioned on either the right side or left side.
