David first started woodworking at the age of 15, as an after school job doing residential cabinetry. He went on to study design and fine arts at the School of Visual Arts in New York and, after learning of the American craft movement and studio arts, was inspired to focus on furniture-making. The process of creating a piece from conception to final product offered the kind of control that appealed to him as a builder and designer.
In 2009, David started his own custom design and fabrication company, David Alexander Designs, which specializes in furniture, cabinetry, and commercial installations in New York City. His studio furniture has been featured at the Furniture Project in Boston, the Visual Arts Gallery in NYC, and the Dumbo Arts Festival in Brooklyn.
David has taught design at several institutions around the world, including: the Polymoda School of Design in Florence, Italy; the Guayasamin Foundation in Quito, Ecuador; and 3rd Ward Craft Studios in Brooklyn, New York. He also participates in NYC events such as Mercedes Benz fashion week and New York design week.
