Side Rabbet Plane Pair
Based on the Stanley No. 98 and 99, our Side Rabbet Planes are the perfect answer to trimming and widening rabbets, dadoes, and all kinds of hard-to-reach recesses and corners. Superbly crafted in Bronze with polished Cherry knobs. The low angle A2 blades produce excellent cuts on both end and long grain. Adjustable depth stops control depth and help steady the tool to the work. The front shoe can be reversed to create a bullnose or removed completely to allow access into tight corners.
Rather than combining two blades in one tool, we offer a matched pair, one left and one right, so you can choose the one best suited to grain direction and type of cut.

Side Rabbet Plane Pair
This pair of side rabbet, or fillister, planes is perfect for cleaning up or
widening dadoes, rabbets, tenons and sliding dovetails. Width (depth) of
cut is 1/2". These tools will fit into a 3/16" groove at full depth. Body is
4-1/2" long x 2” high. A shoe in front of the blade can be removed to
allow the tool to reach right into the corners of your work.
The blade is bedded at 8° with a 25° bevel, for an included
cutting angle of 33°.
The brass shoe installed in front of the blade may be reversed to
allow planing to within 3/16" of the end of a groove, or removed entirely.
Adjust the blade by hand. Loosen the cap screw,
then sight along the sole for depth of cut, and to make sure the edge
is parallel to the sole.
The blades are ready to cut wood out of the
box. They are ground sharp at a 25° bevel. You may wish to give
them a light honing before use. A secondary bevel helps achieve a
Maintain the 25° bevel, or adjust as needed for harder
woods. The skew angle is 30°. The blade can be honed
freehand, or you can build a jig to hold the blade while
using a stone in your hand to sharpen it.
Note: As you sharpen the blade, you will have to restore the relief
angle to allow the blade to plane to the bottom of a groove.
We use Manganese Bronze for our tool bodies. These
castings are fully stress relieved, a process that removes inherent stresses
and ensures that the tool will remain flat and true. The blade is A-2 Tool
Steel, cryogenically treated and double tempered to Rockwell 60-62.
Our heat treating technique ensures that the blade will take and hold
a very fine edge for a long time. After heat treating, the blade is fully
surface ground on the top, back, and cutting edge, giving a smooth, flat
surface that will take a mirror finish very quickly. The 1/8" thickness
provides solid chatter-free cutting.
The Bronze bodies are hand lapped flat. Depending
on how much use your tool gets, an occasional light sanding with 320
or finer wet/dry paper on a flat surface will keep the sole in as-new
condition. Many people like the patina that Bronze gets with age and
use, but if you wish to keep the finish bright a little brass polish is in
