No. 62 Low Angle Jack Plane Blade, 90º Bevel

Low Angle Jack Plane Blade, 90º Bevel

This blade comes with a flat ground, 90º bevel, allowing you to use the Low Angle Jack Plane as a scraping plane.

The 90° edge of the Scraper Blade can be sharpened by creating a crisp intersection of the flat end and the back of the blade. Honing and polishing the flat edge, and then removing the burr from the back of the blade creates the polished 90° edge. Hold the blade vertically, with the flat "bevel" registered on a coarse waterstone, and the back of the blade braced against a scrap of wood with a trusted 90° angle. Pass the blade and scrap wood back and forth across the stone to distribute wear evenly, as you would square and polish the edges of a handscraper before turning a burr. Holding the blade consistently at 90° is the most critical part of sharpening these blades.

Begin working the edge on a 1,000 grit stone, and then move to your polishing stone. We recommend either 8,000 or 10,000 grit. Once you've polished the 90° flat bevel, remove the burr from the back of the blade on your polishing stone, the same way you would any plane blade. The "ruler trick" can be used to focus polishing on the edge of the blade.

Made from A2 Tool Steel, cryogenically treated, hardened to Rockwell 60-62 and double tempered. Our heat treating technique ensures that the blade will take and hold a very fine edge for a long time. After heat treating, the blade is fully surface ground on the top, back, and cutting edge, giving a smooth, flat surface that will take a mirror finish very quickly.

Blades should be kept lightly oiled or waxed to prevent rust. We recommend Jojoba Oil, a plant based oil product that is non-toxic, odor-free and easy to use. Also, in our shop, we use a fine abrasive handblock to remove any light surface oxide from tool bodies and blades. Jojoba Oil and abrasive handblocks are available from us.
