Knowing how to properly sharpen plane blades and set up your hand tools are crucial skills for making your woodworking easy and enjoyable. In this course, hand tool expert Deneb Puchalski will go over the methods of sharpening and set up to take the guesswork out of your woodworking. On day one the class will focus on sharpening, tool setup, and construction of an angle setting jig. Day two will focus on planing techniques; students will work on dimensioning lumber by taking a board from rough sawn to four-square. In addition to plane blades, students will also learn how to properly sharpen and use their chisels. By the end of the weekend students will understand how a sharp edge looks and feels, and be able to get repeatable results with a sharp plane blade.
Due to the demand for this workshop, we are offering the same class in June and August, to provide more students an opportunity to learn these essential skills.
Deneb Puchalski is the lead demonstrator for our Hand Tool Events ® and has traveled across North America and the UK teaching people about our tools. Deneb studied woodworking at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport, Maine. He went on to become an assistant instructor and artist-in-residence at that school, during which time he honed his woodworking skills and sense of design. In addition to contributing articles to various woodworking magazines, Deneb is the leading talent for our YouTube instructional videos about hand tools and woodworking. He has also taught workshops at woodworking schools around the country.
Below are some of the tools we'll learn about in the class. We encourage you to bring your own tools or buy the required tools when you get here, as there are not enough classroom tools to outfit everyone.
Please do not bring tools in need of repair or major fettling – there will not be time to fully tune them for use during the workshop.
Please keep in mind, the best way to guarantee available tools for the class is to call ahead with an order. Some items on this list may be specific to another toolmaker. Please call us with any questions.
Note: The list below references tools Lie-Nielsen carries, though you are welcome to bring tools from other makers.
We strongly recommend these sharpening tools for use with this class.
