Students attending this class will spend the weekend making a Dovetailed School Box inspired by Christopher Schwarz and the book, "The Joiner and Cabinet Maker" by Lost Art Press.

In this workshop Freddy Roman will show how to work with pre-milled and dimensioned materials to create a simple and elegant dovetailed box. Students will use hand planes, saws, and chisels to cut the dovetails, dadoes and miters that make up this project.

The project presented in this course serves as a great introduction to using hand tools. This workshop is open to all skill levels, and beginners are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to learn how to incorporate the most fundamental joinery techniques into your work.

About the Instructor

Furniture maker and restorer Freddy Roman apprenticed under master craftsman Philip C. Lowe at the Furniture Institute of Massachusetts in Beverly, MA. After graduating, Freddy worked for conservation studios and cabinet shops restoring furniture and making built-ins, kitchens, architectural elements, and reproducing museum quality furniture. Freddy has also continued to study in the field of furniture making, restoration, and conservation from today's masters.

In 2007 Freddy opened a furniture making and restoration studio located in Littleton, MA. Freddy is currently working for private clients, institutions, and conservation studios. When Freddy isn't in the studio, he can be found educating the public, teaching and demonstrating across the United States.

Required Tools

Below are some of the tools we'll learn about in the class. We encourage you to bring your own tools or buy the required tools when you get here, as there are not enough classroom tools to outfit everyone.

Please do not bring tools in need of repair or major fettling – there will not be time to fully tune them for use during the workshop.

Please keep in mind, the best way to guarantee available tools for the class is to call ahead with an order. Some items on this list may be specific to another toolmaker. Please call us with any questions.

Note: The list below references tools Lie-Nielsen carries, though you are welcome to bring tools from other makers.
