This workshop will expand upon tool expert Deneb Puchalski's "Hand Tools Demystified" course, and focus on how to get the most out of your hand tool collection. Deneb will walk you through the basics of coarse, medium, and fine cuts, and discuss how different types of hand tools work together.
During this course students will use a selection of our "Core Tools" to prepare stock for a portable tool chest. Students will practice many techniques, including dovetailing, glue-up of a carcass, dimensioning lumber, layout and preparation of trim and other details, and through this process will learn to execute a design.
The principles covered in this course will easily translate to future woodworking projects. The focus is not on the completion of a project during the weekend, but rather on giving students the foundation to take their ideas from concept to a finished piece.
Due to the demand for this workshop, we are offering the same class in June and August, to provide more students an opportunity to learn these essential skills.
About the Instructor:
Deneb Puchalski is the lead demonstrator for our Hand Tool Events® and has traveled across North America and the UK teaching people about our tools. Deneb studied woodworking at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport, Maine. He went on to become an assistant instructor and artist-in-residence at that school, during which time he honed his woodworking skills and sense of design. In addition to contributing articles to various woodworking magazines, Deneb is the leading talent for our YouTube instructional videos about hand tools and woodworking. He has also taught workshops at woodworking schools around the country.
Below are some of the tools we'll learn about in the class. We encourage you to bring your own tools or buy the required tools when you get here, as there are not enough classroom tools to outfit everyone.
Please do not bring tools in need of repair or major fettling – there will not be time to fully tune them for use during the workshop.
Please keep in mind, the best way to guarantee available tools for the class is to call ahead with an order. Some items on this list may be specific to another toolmaker. Please call us with any questions.
